EOGHAN Rua have informed Derry county board that they are withdrawing from this year's Senior Club Hurling Championship.

The Coleraine club entered the senior grade for the first time in their history in 2014 and almost pulled off a massive shock in their first game, falling narrowly to Ballinascreen.

They returned last year but were walloped 5-15 to 1-6 by Swatragh in the quarter-final.

Eoghan Rua's status provincially was still as a junior side and they recovered to win the Ulster junior title before reaching the All-Ireland final back in February.

But with the Derry club football Championship reverting to a straight knockout format this year, their struggle in getting players to commit to hurling has continued and forced their hand.

Swatragh, who were due to meet them again in the quarter-final next weekend, will now receive a bye to the semi-final to meet either Lavey or Slaughtneil.
