DUSTIN Johnson cemented his position at the top of the world golf rankings by winning the WGC-Mexico by one shot.

Johnson started the day one behind leader Justin Thomas and with Rory McIlroy, the third member of the final group, only one shot further back, fireworks were expected.

They didn't come from McIlroy, however, as the world number three dropped a shot at the third hole and watched Johnson birdie the second, sixth, eight and ninth to open up a three-shot lead on the field.

McIlroy picked up his first shot of the day at the sixth but gave it straight back at the next and with only one birdie and eight pars on the back nine, his challenge eventually faded as he finished tied for seventh on 10-under after a round of level-par 71.

Spain's John Rahm looked like the man to cash in on Johnson's back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13, but Rahm himself dropped two in two holes at 16 and 17, while Johnson steadied the ship with a birdie at 15 and pars at the last three holes to finish with a round of 68 for 14-under and a one-shot win from England's Tommy Fleetwood, whose monster birdie putt at the last gave him a fleeting chance of a play-off, only to see Johnson's tricky approach from a fairway bunker at the last reach the green, from where he two-putted for his par.

Fleetwood was one clear of Rahm (68) and another Englishman, Ross Fisher (65), with Thomas Pieters (68) and overnight leader Justin Thomas (72) sharing fifth, and McIlroy sharing seventh with Brandt Snedeker (65) and Phil Mickelson (71). England's Tyrrell Hatton completed the top 10 on nine-under after a final round of 70.
