WARREN Feeney is the new manager of Glentoran - while Jim Magilton and Gerard Lyttle could yet be Cliftonville-bound after being seemingly ruled out of the running only a few weeks ago.

Feeney, who once held the Linfield reins, replaces Rodney McAree who returned to his old stomping ground of Dungannon Swifts.

The 42-year-old Feeney leaves National League South side Welling United to take charge at the Oval. He also had managerial spells with Ards and OFC Pirin Blagoevgrad.

"I jumped at this offer from Glentoran," said Feeney.

"Any time I've been home over the past couple of years I've been at the Oval to watch the Glens, including the play-off last month," he told the club website.

"So I know the squad we have here and their potential for next season. I'm an East Belfast person who has a lot of Glenmen mates so I know what's expected from one of the biggest clubs on the island."

Meanwhile, Cliftonville could be a step closer to appointing Magilton and Lyttle as successors to Paddy McLaughlin who left for Derry City towards the end of the season.

It seemed as though the Reds board had ruled out the duo - but it is understood contact has been re-established.

Lyttle is a former Cliftonville player and key member of Tommy Breslin's backroom team that won back-to-back league titles in 2013 and 2014 and was recently in charge of Northern Ireland's U17 and U19 sides.

He took the Reds' reins after Breslin departed before leaving himself for a managerial stint at Sligo Rovers.

Magilton also has international managerial experience with the North's underage set-up and had a short spell with Dundalk.
