THE 2017 edition of Jimmy’s 10K, organised by East Down Athletic Club and supported by MB McGrady & Co Chartered Accountants, takes place on Sunday, March 12 and the event is already set to achieve its highest-ever participant numbers.

“We’ve got exceptionally strong athletics clubs in county Down and the surrounding areas, which ensures a solid level of support from our local runners every year,” said East Down AC chairman, Simon McGrattan.

“This is then complemented by runners from across Northern Ireland who want to benchmark their times at the start of the season.”

“The event’s March timing has really helped participation levels to grow as it marks the start of the competition season – being the first race in the Novosco 10K Grand Prix – and it’s the perfect training milestone for runners who are competing in the Belfast Marathon.”

East Down AC established the first Jimmy’s 10K in 1999 in memory of Jimmy Murray, a Downpatrick teacher and athletics enthusiast, who was one of the founding members of the club in 1987.

Last year, Paddy Hamilton from Slieve Gullion Runners was first past the post in a race that featured 875 runners, including those participating in 26 relay teams.

With numbers capped at 900, almost 90 per cent of places have already been allocated but there is still time to register at https://online.athleticsni.org/ps/event/JimmysTen2017.
