Madden master Silverbridge in Armagh championship opener

Silverbridge 0-05 Madden 1-07

Aron McKenna’s first half 1-02 was enough for Madden to prevail over Silverbridge on a night you wouldn’t put a cat out.

Played at the Bridge, Madden led 1-04 to no score at the break with conditions of swerving wind and hard rain making the game a bit of a lottery. That didn’t prevent both teams from trying to play football but it rarely worked out.

It was like kicking a balloon in a wind tunnel although McKenna’s two first half points were beauties and his 28th minute goal came after Madden countered with the brilliant Donal Rafferty making a break for it. Madden’s other first half scorers were Joe Sheridan and Conor Grimley.

Silverbridge were much the better team in the second half but they couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard, Sean Rock, Ronan Reel, Tiarnan Murphy, Conor Hearty and county man Jarly Og Burns pulled back points.

However, despite struggling Madden managed pick off points with Darragh Mullen, substitute Mike Haughey and the impressive Niall Smyth on target late on, to finish five-point winners.

Silverbridge scorers:  S Rock, R Reel, T Murphy, C Hearty, J Burns 0-01 each.

Madden scorers: A McKenna 1-02, J Sheridan, C Grimley, D Mullen, M Haughey, N Smyth 0-01 each.
