SHANE Lowry carded an opening round of two-under 68 on day one of the Wyndham Championship in Memphis on Thursday.

The Offaly man, who is battling to qualify for the FedEx Cup for a fifth straight year, had three birdies and one bogey in his round and starts round two six shots off the lead, held by Russell Henley, whose 62 included six birdies and an eagle.

Lowry is currently 76th in the FedEx Cup standings and needs to climb inside the top 70 this week after the field for next week's first play-off event was reduced from 125.

Canada's Adam Svensson sits one behind Henley after a 63, with Andrew Novak (64) third and Adam Scott and JT Poston sharing fourth on five under par.
