Dodgy Tackle: Another week, another FIFA franchise scandal

ANOTHER week, another Fifa scandal. However, this is one that Sepp Blatter can say he has nothing to do with and actually mean it.

I say scandal, in the grand scheme of things it’s more a collective foot-stamping and arms-folding tantrum from fans of the Fifa franchise of video games who are threatening to boycott the next version of the game.

Why? Is it due to Fifa’s rampant corruption? Is it to do with the dubiously awarded 2022 World Cup which takes place in a country where over a thousand immigrant workers have already died constructing stadia?

Is it because the Women’s World Cup is being played on an artificial surface, something which would never happen in the male equivalent?

No, they’re throwing their controls up in despair at the prospect of Jordan Henderson appearing on the cover of Fifa 16.

Many have taken to Twitter to vex their displeasure at the possibility that the new Liverpool captain may adorn the cover of the much-loved game alongside Lionel Messi.

Previous partners of Messi have included Wayne Rooney and Eden Hazard, but makers EA have this time decided to put it to a public vote with Henderson (right) in a shortlist with Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Thibaut Courtois.

As it stands, Henderson is leading the voting.

“If Jordan Henderson is on the front of the new Fifa 16, I’m not buying” is the general tone of the tweets on the subject.

Rumours that disaffected gaming fans are uniting around a Jordanian prince as an alternative candidate are unfounded, but you could stick Jordan herself on the front and it wouldn’t make a button of difference, the game would still be over-priced and over-hyped.

Sure, why not just stick a picture of aul’ Sepp on it for old times sake. It would be a sellout in Qatar – something Fifa are well familiar with.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Now I’m seen as bad as the guy who brought AIDS to Africa or the guy who caused the financial crisis. My name is all over [this mess] and apparently I am a propaganda guy making films for corrupt people. I’m a victim of the game. It’s a disaster, but that is not the point, I accepted the job, but I was not paid to be the Che Guevara of the sports business. Please don’t make me the guy responsible for the fact that Fifa is rotten.”

Frederic Auburtin, the director of Fifa film United Passion doing the equivalent of waking up and wondering what he has done. The film grossed a measly $918 in the US box office.
