Huge regret over Gap of Dunloe tragedy

The jaunting cars which operate around the Gap of Dunloe in Co Kerry are internationally famous and have always been regarded as one of Ireland's most celebrated tourist attractions.

There will be enormous regret over the deaths of two US visitors, a couple both aged in their 60s, who were killed in a freak accident when they were thrown on to rocks after the horse pulling their trap appears to have bolted.

A full investigation is under way into Monday's tragedy, with regular services in the picturesque area outside Killarney suspended yesterday as prayers were offered for the victims.

The Health and Safety Authority is liaising with gardaí, and it will be expected that any recommendations it puts forward are implemented without delay.
