Welcome for Moore Street ruling

THERE will be a widespread welcome for the declaration at the High Court in Dublin that the area of the city's historic Moore Street which is to be declared a national monument should be considerably wider than originally intended by the authorities.

The proposal covers the buildings where the leaders of the Easter Rising rising gathered prior to their surrender and subsequent execution almost exactly 100 years ago

There had been concerns that some form of commercial development might be allowed to go ahead in the same vicinity, against the wishes of the 1916 Relatives Association.

Friday's legal ruling should safeguard an area of enormous significance and represents an appropriate outcome to a particularly intense debate.
