Girl (3) killed in Portlaoise collision named locally as Rosaleen McDonagh

A three-year-old girl was knocked down and killed as she played near her home in Co Laois yesterday. 

The girl has been named locally as Rosaleen McDonagh. 

Her grandmother asked people to pray for Rosaleen in a post on social media. 

Other family members and friends paid tribute to the child, with one writing online: “Rest in perfect paradise baby girl, you were way too good for this cruel world.”

Another posted: “I can’t believe ur gone only 3 years old such a Cruel world u we’re always happy and always had a smile on ur face ”

The collision happened at Cosby Avenue in the Fairgreen area of Portlaoise at around 1.15pm on Wednesday.

The girl was seriously injured and taken to Midland Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead,

The scene of the crash remained closed on Wednesday to allow for a forensic collision investigation by Gardaí.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them," a spokesperson for the force said.

"Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and who were in the Fairgreen area of Portlaoise this afternoon between 12.45pm and 1.30pm, is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí."
