A five-year-old boy has died following an incident involving a quad bike in Co Kerry.

The incident happened in the Castlegregory area in west Kerry on Saturday.

It has been reported that the child lived in Britain and had been on holiday visiting relatives in the area when the incident occurred.

A Gardaí spokesperson said emergency services responded to the incident, which happened on private property, but the boy "later passed away from his injuries".

“A family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family at this time," they said.

“An Garda Síochána asked that the media give the family privacy at this time and report on this incident sensitively.”

The spokesperson added that no further information is being made available at this time.

Kerry Fianna Fáil councillor Breandán Fitzgerald said: “Our hearts go out to the family of the boy and our thoughts and prayers are with them in this desperate tragic time."

Local parish priest Fr Eamonn Mulvihill said the family "need our support and prayers".
