THE family who died in a road crash in Co Galway last Thursday night have been named locally as Karzan Sabah, his wife Shahen Qasm and their eight-month-old daughter Lena.

The Kurdish couple and their baby were among four people killed in the three-vehicle collision on the M6 motorway, near Ballinasloe.

The collision happened at around 7.40pm on Thursday, in a 24-hour period that saw six people killed on Ireland's roads and a further six people injured in a three-car crash on the north's M1.

In a post on their Facebook page, the Kurdish Irish Society posted a photograph of the family, and extended their sympathies to their relatives.

They described Mr Sabah as a former PhD student in agriculture.

Hundreds of people expressed sorrow at the tragedy and extended their condolences to all who knew the family and those affected by it.

The other person who died in the crash had been driving in the wrong direction on the M6 before colliding head-on with the family's vehicle.

An occupant of a third car was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The collision took place just hours after two men were killed in a three-car collions on the R152 at Keenogue, Duleek in Co Meath.

The driver of a van, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man in his 30s, who was driving a car, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, with serious injuries but died a short time later.
