A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been charged in the Republic with funding terrorism.

Hasan Bal, who is originally from Britain but has lived in the Republic for more than a decade, was remanded in custody after a brief hearing at Waterford District Court yesterday.

He was charged with providing funds for a terrorist organisation on October 2 2015 and attempting to provide funds later that month.

The organisation was not named in court but it is understood the Garda investigation relates to Islamic terrorism.

Mr Bal, who holds British and Irish passports, was said to have made no reply when both charges were put to him.

Two detectives told the court he was arrested on Thursday in Waterford and charged under the Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005.

The accused, who has a beard and was wearing a black jacket, stood as the case was called but did not speak and no application for bail was made.

His solicitor Pat Newell told the court that he was applying for legal aid and was reserving his position on bail until the case is back before the court on Tuesday.

A woman arrested in Waterford on Thursday as part of the same investigation was released without charge, with a file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
