CELEBRATED painter Micheál Ó Nualláin, a brother of Strabane-born writer Flann O'Brien, has died at the age of 88.

Mr Ó Nualláin, who lived in Monkstown, Co Dublin, worked as an artist, designer, teacher and art inspector for decades before his retirement in 1993.

His portrait of his brother, whose birth name was Brian O'Nolan but also used Myles na gCopaleen, was on a commemorative stamp released in the Republic in 2011 on the centenary of the writer's birth.

President Michael D Higgins led tributes to Mr Ó Nualláin on Monday.

"His contribution and commitment to education, art and design lasted throughout his whole life. He had a sustained commitment to the public world and, within it, the role of art," he said.
