An American woman and her father jailed over the killing of her Limerick-born husband are to remain in prison until next summer, after initial reports they were to be released imminently.

It comes after prison authorities said on Monday that Molly Martens (40) and her father Thomas (73) were due for release next week.

The North Carolina department of adult corrections said the pair would be freed to spend 12 months under supervised probation.

The announcement sparked an outcry from the family of Mr Corbett (39), a father-of-two, who said they were "appalled" to learn about the early release.

They added in a statement that freeing the pair "after spending just one month extra behind bars is an insult to Jason's memory and our family".

However, later on Monday it was confirmed that a miscalculation of the sentences had been made.

In a second statement, prison authorities said “after further review, the initial projected release dates calculated in response to resentencing for Molly Corbett and Thomas Martens were found to be incorrect”.

“The current projected release dates for both are June 27th, 2024.

"Corbett and Martens will be transferred to state prison facilities to complete the remainder of their sentences."

It has been reported that they  had been moved to the jail in Davidson county, near Lexington, in preparation for their anticipated release this week.

But they will now be returned to state prisons to finish out their sentences.

Last month they were given additional jail time after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Corbett (39), who was beaten to death in 2015.

Martens and her former FBI agent father were convicted of second-degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to 20 and 25 years respectively.

But their convictions were quashed by an appeal court in 2020 and a new trial ordered.

Earlier this year they agreed to plea deals to manslaughter charges in relation to his killing and were sentenced to between seven and 30 additional months.

The pair never denied killing him, but claimed they acted in self-defence.

Following the announcement that the Martens' would not be released next week, the family of Mr Corbett said the last few days had caused much "pain".

In a statement on their Facebook page, Jason’s Journey, they said: "Molly and Tom Martens will not be released until at least June 2024.

"I hope they issue an apology to Jack, Sarah & all of Jason’s family.

"The pain, anguish & upset that was caused today was immeasurable. Thank you everyone for all the supportive messages.

"You are the best."
