The north Belfast businessman behind one of New York's most popular Irish bars has revealed he is opening a new venue in the capital of the US.

The Dead Rabbit in lower Manhattan was founded by Ardoyne duo Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry in 2013.

The venue topped the World's 50 Best Bars annual industry list in 2016, and its success even inspired its owners to release their own brand of Irish whiskey and a series of cocktail recipe books.

The two men announced the end of their partnership last year, with Mr Muldoon going on to open a new bar in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mr McGarry is already planning to open a new Dead Rabbit in Austin, Texas, while last month saw him launch a new pub venture in New York, the Irish Exit in the city's Penn Station.

He revealed on Thursday the Dead Rabbit brand will expand to the US capital, with a venue opening next year in Washington DC.

"Opening in 2024, our 6,200 square-foot, two-floor space stands proudly in the center of the entertainment district," a post on the Dead Rabbit Facebook page stated.

"Get ready for perfect pints, Irish coffees, plenty of live music and, of course - Irish whiskey. We can’t wait to call you home."

Mr McGarry added in a post he was "super excited" for the new venture.
