The Irish News’ Robert McMillen has been shortlisted for an award that celebrates the high quality of the Irish language communication sector.

The newspaper's Irish language editor is among the nominees for Columnist of the Year as part of Oireachtas na Gaeilge’s prestigious annual media awards.

Each year, An tOireachtas marks the achievement and excellence in the Irish language media sector.

The awards recognise presenters, producers, journalists and columnists, actors and producers of radio and television programmes who have made an outstanding contribution in various areas of media over the past 12 months.

Mr McMillen wrote his first article for the Irish News as a freelance in 1984 and after becoming a staff member in 1999, was made the paper’s Irish language editor in 2001.

“The Irish News was born in 1891 – two years before  the Gaelic League – and through its pages has been a strong supporter of the Irish language in the 130 years since so to be named on the Oireachtas Media Awards is as much a tribute to the Irish News as it is to myself," he said.

“Today, it remains a fervent supporter of the language and its community throughout the north and further afield and has been at the forefront in reporting on the incredible growth of the language movement in all its diversity, from the rise of Gaelscoileanna to the campaign for an Irish language Act and to the growing interest of people from outside its traditional hinterland.”
