An annual lecture has been established in memory of the late historian Dr Éamon Phoenix.

Stranmillis University College said the lecture will be dedicated to "honouring the legacy of our esteemed late colleague".

It comes after Dr Phoenix, an Irish News columnist, acclaimed author and broadcaster, passed away in November following a short illness. He was 69.

Tributes following his death remembered him as a "gifted communicator" whose contribution to advancing the understanding of the north's history was unmatched.

Announcing the establishment of the Dr Éamon Phoenix Memorial Lecture, Stranmillis University College said it reflects its "commitment to advancing educational excellence and celebrating the contributions of remarkable individuals to the academic community".

"Dr Phoenix, an outstanding historian, communicator, teacher and educator, made significant contributions to the field of education throughout his tenure at Stranmillis University College, "a spokesman said.

"His unwavering dedication to fostering innovative teaching approaches, promoting critical thinking, and nurturing a vibrant intellectual environment left an indelible mark on colleagues and students alike.

"The annual lecture will serve as a platform to bring together educators, researchers, students and professionals to engage in thought-provoking discussions on contemporary educational themes.
