Towering piles of wooden pallets were replaced by scorch marks and clutter on Wednesday morning after an Eleventh night that saw fire crews responding to 34 bonfire-related incidents.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a total of 147 emergency 999 calls between 6pm on Tuesday and 2am on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to 98 operational incidents, 34 of which were bonfire-related.

A spokesperson for NIFRS said: “During this period, the number of emergency calls received was down 28 per cent compared to 2022, however the number of bonfire incidents we attended was only one less than last year.

“Peak activity was between 10pm and 1am.”

Normal emergency services were also maintained during the evening, including callouts to a kitchen fire and other emergencies.

The largest bonfire in the Craigyhill area of Larne saw tens of thousands of spectators watch the enormous structure set alight, before it crashed sidewards onto a field.

Working to prevent any heat damage to neighboring properties, firefighters were seen hosing down houses overnight.

In north Belfast, a bonfire pile in the Glencairn area was still smouldering on Wednesday morning.

In the east of the city, damage was caused to a shared cycle and walking path which runs through a car park at the start of the Bloomfield Walkway.

Once an area of concern, it no longer hosts a major bonfire. In previous years, Belfast City Council had deployed contractors to remove material over fears it was too large and close to houses. This year, material only appeared on Tuesday evening a few hours before being set alight.

What is the Twelfth of July?

Nearby on Bloomdale Street, the remains of an ad-hoc Eleventh night bonfire, which appeared to have also included setting fire to trolleys taken from nearby Connswater Shopping Centre, caused significant damage to the road surface and made the street inaccessible to traffic from one end.

Meanwhile, in Belfast City Centre council workers were quickly on the scene to clear up rubbish as the Twelfth celebrations were in full swing.
