Police in Derry have launched an investigation after an indecent image was reportedly shown to a group of primary school age children gathered for a screening of the new Super Mario Bros film.

The Waterside Theatre has apologised for the incident on Friday, describing it as "unfortunate but serious".

The image, believed to be of a partially clothed woman, appeared briefly to the young audience, understood to have been mainly made up of children attending a summer scheme programme.

Parents of children who were present were later informed of the incident, according to BBC NI.

The PSNI confirmed a report of the incident had been made and an investigation had been launched.

"Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information that could help with this investigation is asked to contact police.”

A statement posted by the Derry city theatre on Friday evening said: “Waterside Theatre is aware of an unfortunate but serious incident happening today.

“The welfare of our visitors is always our main concern and we will be working with the relevant authorities which means we cannot comment further at this time.

“We offer our sincere apologies to all those affected.”
