A lung health charity has warned people attending Eleventh Night bonfires to be aware of risks including "potentially life-threatening" asthma attacks.

Asthma + Lung UK Northern Ireland has said those with existing conditions including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) should "stand well back" from bonfires and for others to be aware of those attending who may also be at risk of flare-ups caused by smoke particles.

Hundreds of bonfires will be lit across the north next Tuesday night ahead of Twelfth of July celebrations.

Asthma sufferers are advised to take preventative medicines and to always carry their inhalers while attending bonfire sites.

Asthma + Lung UK NI's Joseph Carter said: “Smoke from bonfires can stay in the air for quite a long time, creating areas of air pollution that can trigger asthma attacks or symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and breathlessness.”

He added: “We advise anyone with a lung condition such as asthma to ensure their friends and family know what to do if they have an asthma attack.”
