An Irish woman has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of abandoning her child while drunk.

It has been reported that the 45-year-old allegedly left her five-year-old daughter to go out drinking while on holiday in Majorca.

The woman was detained at a hotel in Manacor last Tuesday.

Reports suggest she drank throughout the day and her daughter had  to be cared for by other tourists.

It remains unclear where the woman is from in Ireland.

Belfast Live reported that a spokesman for Spain’s National Police said the child had been reunited the child with her father who had flown in from Ireland.

“We have arrested an Irish woman aged 45 who was on holiday in Majorca for a crime of child abandonment," he said.

“Staff stopped serving her but she went to a supermarket opposite to buy beer she would consume there.”

He said that other guests raised the alarm and "she was arrested after being located in her hotel room and finally opening the door in a state of obvious drunkenness".

“The child was taken to a specialist centre until the following day when her father, who was in Ireland, arrived to take charge of her," he added.
