RTÉ weather presenter Evelyn Cusack has said she is "really grateful" for her long career as she retires after decades at the broadcaster and Met Éireann.

The meteorologist, from Co Laois, has worked for Met Éireann for 42 years, and spent 30 years helming weather bulletins at RTÉ.

She stepped down from her roles on Thursday, and spoke fondly of her career, which began after she qualified from University College Dublin.

Ms Cusack joined RTÉ in 1988, and was eventually promoted to Head of Forecasting at the broadcaster in 2017.

That year saw Ireland hit by Storm Ophelia, one of the worst storms to affect the island in over 50 years.

She told RTÉ that she is now keen to observe the future of meteorology, and how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact the profession.

"Met Éireann is putting in a professorship in a university which will be announced shortly, and AI development is to be part of that," she said.

"I'm really grateful to have been working this long and to feel so well and healthy," she added.
