A teenage girl has been killed in a tractor crash in Co Cavan.

Gardaí said it is believed that the vehicle collided with a ditch in the Loughduff area on Tuesday at around 11pm.

A teenage boy, who was driving the tractor, was uninjured.

A Gardaí spokesperson said: "A female juvenile (aged in her late teens) was fatally injured when the tractor collided with a ditch.

"Her body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary in Cavan General Hospital where a post mortem will take place in due course.

"A male juvenile (aged in his late teens) who was driving the tractor was uninjured.

"The road is currently closed pending an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place."

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses, particularly drivers who were in the area between 10.45pm and 11.15pm and may have camera footage.

Earlier this month, a 13-year-old boy died in hospital from injuries he sustained in a tractor crash near Claremorris, in Co Mayo.

Named locally as Kyle Pilbrow, the boy is understood to have behind the wheel of the tractor when it overturned.

Meanwhile, a man in his 80s has died after being struck by a car in Co Louth.

The collision occurred at Annagassan, Lynns, on Tuesday at about 7.55pm.

The body of the male pedestrian was taken from the scene to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The driver of the car was uninjured in the incident.

The scene of the collision on the R166 from Castlebellingham to Annagassan Road remained closed on Wednesday morning pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
