A fund-raising page for tragic Derry hairdresser Rebecca Browne, has reached double its target of £3,000 within twenty hours of being launched.

Ms Browne, from Galliagh, died when she was struck by a Garda patrol car on the outskirts of Buncrana early on Sunday morning. The 21-year-old hairdresser was spending the night in the Inishowen two with her cousin when the tragedy occurred.

It is understood Ms Browne was returning to her accommodation from a wedding reception when the accident happened at Ludden on the main Derry to Buncrana road. Her death is being investigated by the Republic’s Garda Ombudsman who was automatically called in because of the involvement of a Garda vehicle.

Ms Browne was well known through her work at Sage Hair and Beauty salon in the city’s Waterside and news of her death sparked a huge outpouring of grief in the city and in Donegal.

A Gofundme page was set up on social media by friends of the road victim to raise money to help Ms Browne’s family with funeral and other expenses.

Friends, Paul Monk, Eoghan Cummings and Karina Smith said: “We are hoping to raise funds for the family of Rebecca Browne, who was tragically killed in Buncrana during the early hours of Sunday morning 21st of May. Any contributions towards funeral costs and other expenses would greatly help Lynn, Jerry and Ethan (Ms Browne’s mum, dad and younger brother) at this extremely devastating time.”

Mr Monk said Ms Browne was “one of a kind” and was beautiful inside and out.

The group set out to raise £3,000 but within twenty hours of launching the fund, the amount donated was almost twice the original target (£5,900), with contributions ranging from £10 to £200.
