'Suspicious object' sparks security alert in north Belfast

PART of a main road in north Belfast remained closed on Thursday night as a result of a security alert.

Police closed the Antrim Road between its junction with Hopefield Avenue and Limestone Road at around 5pm following the discovery of a suspicious object close to the Willowbank Gardens area.

In a social media post, a PSNI spokesperson said the object was being examined, before further cordons for both traffic and pedestrians were put in place close to the scene, with people urged to avoid the area.

North Belfast Green Party councillor Mal O'Hara said on Thursday evening: "I would urge people to avoid the area while this remains ongoing.

"Although we don't know more about this object, this area really doesn't need this disruption as commuters are just going about their lives, and I would urge anyone with information on suspicious activity to contact police."

The Antrim Road in north Belfast has now been closed between Hopefield Avenue and Limestone Road due to an ongoing security alert
