The PSNI is not probing remarks by an SDLP councillor who raised governance concerns about an east Belfast football club with alleged links to the UVF.

Complaints were made against Lisnarsharragh representative Séamas de Faoite by Jamie Bryson's JWB Consultancy after he raised concerns last month about Belfast City Council funding for East Belfast FC.

The club's former head coach Stephen Matthews is currently being prosecuted in relation to a loyalist “show of strength”.

The SDLP councillor attempted to halt £20,000 of council funding until a report on governance of the club was completed.

Matthews (59), of Pansey Street, has been charged with unlawful assembly and affray in relation to an incident at Pitt Park in east Belfast two years ago.

He stood down as manager of East Belfast FC when the 2021-22 season came to a close at the end of May.

Mr Bryson's complaint claimed Mr de Faoite “broke the confidence” of a meeting by making “a number of outrageous remarks in the media”.

The loyalist activist also complained to Local Government Commissioner for Standards and resent his complaint today after the watchdog said the initial correspondence had not been received.

It has emerged that the PSNI are not investigating the complaint, saying there was no criminal matter to be investigated.

However, Mr Bryson said the PSNI had been asked to review its initial assessment “on the basis of significant new material, inclusive of witness statements from other elected councillors”.

Mr de Faiote said he "won’t be intimidated out of doing my job as a SDLP Belfast city councillor".

"I was elected by the people of Lisnasharragh and on their behalf I will endeavour to ask the tough questions about where public money goes and the continued perverse role of paramilitaries in our city," he tweeted.
