A FATAL road crash in Co Down which saw a man lose his life has been called "an absolute tragedy".

Police confirmed the incident happened in the Orange Lane area of Magheralin on Sunday morning.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service was alerted around 7.30am, with one HEMS dispatched via car to the incident and no one was taken from the scene.

Road closures in place at the Orange Lane junction of Drumnabreeze Road and the Newforge Road have now been lifted.

The road victim is now the 43rd person to have died on Northern Ireland Roads this year, which is eight higher than the same time last year.

Sinn Féin councillor Liam Mackle expressed his condolences to the family.

"That wouldn't be a very busy road for traffic so I can't say yet what has happened," he told The Irish News.

"It's an absolute tragedy and we're seeing far too many young people losing their lives on the roads at the moment. Every one is a tragedy and I'm sure his family is in complete desolation at the moment over it."

Alliance councillor Peter Lavery added on social media: "Deepest condolences to the family of the man who passed away following a road traffic collision in Magheralin."

The PSNI has launched an investigation and have called on any witnesses or those with dashcam footage to call 101, quoting reference 608 for October 30.
