THE Charity Commission has contacted Belfast Féile after a complaint was lodged about pro-IRA chants.

The independent charity regulator confirmed it had been in contact with the charity trustees of Féile An Phobail Limited and said a case is "ongoing".

It comes after condemnation of singing in support of the IRA at the Wolfe Tones concert during the west Belfast festival last month.

It was reported earlier this week that Gary Murray, whose sister Leanne (13) was killed in the Shankill bomb, had lodged an official grievance with the commission and PSNI.

Mr Murray is being represented by JWB Consultancy, which is run by Jamie Bryson.

JWB Consultancy has said it hopes the commission "will take robust and urgent steps to protect the integrity of the charity sector".

A spokesperson for the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland yesterday said it "can confirm that it is in touch with the charity trustees of Feile An Phobail Limited regarding the issues which have been raised".

"The commission cannot speculate or comment on a case while it is ongoing," he said.

"This is because the commission is a proportionate and fair regulator of Northern Ireland charities and, as such, would not wish to prejudice any current or potential investigation."

The PSNI has previously said they are investigating whether any offence has been committed following the pro-IRA chanting.
