THE deaths of two 16-year-old boys at Enagh Lough, close to Derry, has invoked memories of other drowning tragedies in recent years, particularly involving young people.

Last year, teenager Jay Moffett died after getting into trouble while swimming in a lake in Co Down.

The 13-year-old from Scarva was with friends in the water in the Canal Court area of his home village when the tragedy happened.

Jay's father Wayne and a family friend desperately fought to save him as the emergency services arrived on the scene. He later died in hospital.

In August 2020, John Mullan (49) and his children Amelia (6) and Tomas (14) drowned after the family car plunged into Lough Foyle at Quigley’s Point in Co Donegal.

His wife and the children's mother, Geraldine, survived the tragedy which happened as they drove home from a day out in Derry and their car left the road.

In June 2020, a teenager died in a double drowning tragedy in Co Donegal after jumping into the water in a desperate effort to save his father's life.

The 17-year-old boy, who was not named, and his father Jonathon Christian lost their lives at Lough Keel near Kilmacrennan.

Originally from Germany, but living in the Isle of Man, the family had a holiday home in the area.

In 2016 five members of the same family perished after their car slid into Lough Swilly.

Sean McGrotty (48), his sons Mark (12) and Evan (8), their aunt Jodie-Lee (14) and grandmother, Ruth Daniels (58), all died in the Buncrana Pier tragedy.

Only Mr McGrotty's infant daughter, Ríoghnach, survived after a passer-by swam out to her father's sinking vehicle and rescued her.

In June 2013, a man died trying in vain to rescue a teenager who had been swimming at a disused quarry in Co Down.

Colin Polland (39) attempted to rescue Kevin O'Hare (15) who had got into difficulties while swimming at the quarry close to Annalong.

And in July 2013, a 15-year-old boy from Ballyclare drowned after he fell into the River Roe in Limavady, Co Derry. He had been visiting family in the area when the tragedy happened.
