An American woman who travelled to Ireland to scatter her parents' ashes was finally reunited with them after they were lost in transit for more than two weeks.

Donna O'Connor flew to Dublin with the ashes in her hold luggage as she was also travelling with her cat, which she had take on the plane in her hand luggage.

Ms O'Connor was to attend a memorial Mass for her late parents, Robert Emmett and Patricia O'Connor. She then planned to scatter their ashes.

However, on arriving in Dublin, it was discovered that her hold luggage was missing.

"The first eight days were especially hard. It was hard not having any idea where my parents might be," she said.

After two-and-a-half weeks in Ireland, Ms O'Connor was told her bag had been found, however, it had been returned to her home in Chicago.

When her bag was returned to Dublin, an airport employee called Dermot contacted Ms O'Connor and offered to pick up her case from the airport and drive it to her in Co Meath.

"Without the help of those who shared my story, I don't think I would have it back," she told the BBC

"I am so grateful for that and for Dermot's kindness. The people of Ireland have been such an emotional support".

With Dermot's help, Ms O'Connor was then able to finally scatter her parent's ashes in Castlebar in Co Mayo.

"I was so relieved," she said.

"Now I'm happy to be here again".
