HOLLYWOOD actor Bill Murray made a surprise appearance at Thurles on Saturday for the All-Ireland hurling quarter-final clash.

The star of Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day is a frequent visitor to Ireland.

He attended the weekend game at Semple Stadium with JP McManus, the businessman and racehorse owner.

The 71-year-old watched as Galway were victorious after a one-point win over Cork.

His appearance comes a few weeks before JP McManus hosts his annual Pro Am golf tournament at Adare Manor when some of the biggest golf stars in the world, including Rory McIlroy, will tee off at the Limerick course.

Last year, the actor, who is of Irish descent, toured the country, playing some of the best golf courses for YouTube series The Links Life.

The actor is known to have a lifetime love of golf. He worked as a caddy when he was in high school and launched the William Murray Golf line of sportswear in 2016.

Last summer, he took part in a raffle to win a signed Mayo jersey in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, in support of cystic fibrosis care.
