A former teacher accused of child abuse at a prestigious Catholic college was also heavily involved in the GAA.

Raymond Gallagher taught at St Columb's College in Derry for decades before suddenly quitting his job in the early 1990s.

Details of his alleged abuse emerged last week after Derry native Terry Doran revealed that he received a £50,000 settlement after taking a case against the college and Gallagher.

It also emerged that Gallagher continued to teach at the school for years after Mr Doran and his father made college authorities aware of his alleged activities in 1978, which at the time Mr Doran says were dismissed.

Gallagher, who is believed to have died in 2007, was a well-known music and Irish language teacher at the school.

He also had a keen interest in Gaelic games and was directly involved in the history making St Columb's College MacRory and Hogan Cup winning sides in 1965.

While that breakthrough team was managed by the highly respected Fr Ignatius McQuillan, Gallagher was one of several others who made up his backroom staff".

It has been suggested that at the time Gallagher also had links to the Derry County GAA Board with sources saying he may have served as a delegate to the Ulster Council.

Several of those involved with the famous St Columb's squad went on to help Derry to the county's first All-Ireland minor title.

Mr Doran last night said the GAA should examine the role of Gallagher within the association.

A spokesman for the Co Derry Board last night said: "The GAA is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all people who participate in our Gaelic games and activities.

"The GAA is committed to taking appropriate action where allegations or suspicions of abuse are made known to us and to sharing such information with the relevant statutory authorities in accordance with legislation and relevant guidelines."

St Columb's College was contacted.

Mr Doran's solicitor Kevin Winters, of KRW Law, said: "Since the revelations about Gallagher emerged more victims have come forward to support Terry. The latest news about a connection with the GAA needs looked at urgently and will factor into our representations."
