NEW tours are to be launched at one of Belfast's most iconic buildings where visitors can "fully immerse themselves in what life was like in centuries past".

The tours, 'In Life and Death', will allow visitors to explore Clifton House and Clifton Street graveyard together with guides sharing the history and stories of the building and its people.

Also using augmented reality, visitors will be able to explore what life was like in the 18th century. Among the highlights of the interactive experience are the 'Black Hole' - a punishment room used for men, women and children when they misbehaved and the basement, which housed the first cotton mill of the town.

Visitors will also hear how Clifton House, which was opened in 1774 by local merchants to help the poor of the city, influenced the development of Belfast and there are new exhibitions which highlight the stories and names of the thousands of people who sought sanctuary within its walls.

After exploring the house, guides will take visitors to Clifton Street Cemetery, one of the most historic graveyards in Belfast.

The 'In Life and Death' Clifton House and Cemetery tours run every Saturday and Sunday with booking essential via cliftonbelfast.com
