A elderly man's mobility scooter has been destroyed after it was tied to the back of a car and dragged down the road in Co Tyrone.

Police said the scooter had been parked on Church Street in Ballygawley on Sunday afternoon when it was taken and tied to the back of a vehicle and dragged away.

Video footage, which has been widely circulated, shows a man dressed in blue jeans and a sports top attach the scooter to the back of the car before driving off.

In a second video, which was taken from within the vehicle dragging the scooter, a number of men can be heard laughing.

One man says: "Disabled person was it?" which is followed by laugher.

The vehicle then pulls to the side of the road, where the scooter is unattached before it is pushed over and the men laugh.

A PSNI spokesman said the scooter was "found damaged beyond repair".

"This was obviously a very distressing ordeal for the victim".

The police spokesman said enquiries into the incident "are continuing".

SDLP councillor, Sharon McAleer branded what had happened "immature and reckless".

"The whole community was disgusted by the act," she said.

"The man is well got. He is an older member of the community and doesn't do anyone any harm. People are very annoyed for him.

"That anyone would target anyone with a disability, carry out any action like that. It was just a terrible act."

Ms McAleer said the community were now "just glad" that the man had received a replacement scooter.
