THE Northern Ireland branch of Ukip has disbanded amid claims that its members have been "undermined" by the party in Britain.

A statement from the regional branch said former members would "remain as a group dedicated to furthering the cause of the union".

The disagreement is said to have arose over Ukip headquarters' apparent "silence" on the Northern Ireland protocol.

The Ukip members in the north said they had become "increasingly disillusioned and frustrated" by the attitude of the eurosceptic party in Britain, which it is claimed showed little in interest in affairs on this side of the Irish Sea.

The statement confirmed that the Northern Ireland regional branch had disbanded.

At its height the party had a handful of councillors in the north and representation at Stormont after David McNarry left the UUP and joined Ukip, becoming its regional leader between 2012-2016.
