THERE was an unexpected flying spectator at the Antrim senior hurling final on Sunday with the appearance of a bird, native to Australia.

The Zebra Finch flew into the crowd at Corrigan Park as Dunloy took on Donavan Rossa in the senior hurling championship, taking a few spectators by surprise with its appearance.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) last night confirmed it was a zebra finch with a spokeswoman adding that while they are native to Australia, they are commonly kept in the north as pets.

This particular species of finch are one of the most popular kept as a pet as they are relatively easy to care for.

Zebra finches are typically kept in pairs and entertain themselves without a lot of interaction with their owners.
