Former senior GAA official, Ryan Feeney is to leave his job as head of the PSNI press office.

Mr Feeney (41), who had served in the role of Director of Strategic Communications and Engagement since 2019, is expected to return to Queen's university to take up a new post.

He is the second senior member of PSNI staff confirmed to be on the move.

Head of Human Resources Yvonne Cooke has also recently left to take up a new post with An Garda Síochána.

Mr Feeney was previously GAA Ulster Council's head of community development, strategy and public affairs with responsibility for communications and marketing.

He was a central figure in attempts to redevelop Casement Park, where some residents in the area were opposed to the plans.

A qualified economics and politics teacher, from Faughanvale, Co Derry, he was first high profile member of the GAA to sit on the Policing Board as an independent.

He later left the GAA to join Queen's University as head of public engagement before moving to the PSNI.

Chief Constable Simon Byrne paid tribute to the departing pair last night.

“These are exciting opportunities for both Ryan and Yvonne," she said.

"On behalf of the Service Executive Team I wish to congratulate them both and place on record my sincere appreciation for the significant contribution both have made to policing across Northern Ireland.

"One of the consequences and challenges for an organisation which employs highly effective, dedicated professionals is that they are much sought after by others.

"Their knowledge and expertise will be missed by their colleagues and the wider organisation and I wish them well for the future.”
