ASPIRING teenage journalists are wanted for a new 12-week after-school course.

Creative writing centre Fighting Words NI has teamed up with journalism charity Headliners to offer a new course in the Skainos Centre in east Belfast.

Students will learn the basics of journalism including interview skills and how to carry out research.

Young journalists are free to choose a topic that they care about and to make their own creative decisions along the way.

The course is open to all young people aged between 13 and 18 and no previous experience is necessary.

As well as working with Fighting Words NI staff and volunteers, there will be opportunities to meet journalists, editors and publishers who will give an insight into the world of professional writing.

The programme will begin on Thursday, September 30 at 4.30pm.

Pádraig O Meiscill, a journalist and project worker with Headliners, said the project wants to hear young people's voices.

“The process will be very much led by the young people; they will pick the topics they care about and how they want to write their stories," he said.
