AN athlete will be cheered across the finishing line tomorrow as he completes his tenth gruelling triathlon in 10 days.

Danny Quigley from Derry has captured the imagination of his home city for his efforts to mark the anniversary of his father’s death by suicide in 2011.

Every day since August 20, he has been joined by increasing numbers of supporters as he completes a daily 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle and 26.2 mile run.

Mr Quigley's father, Colm was a keen triathlete and he set out to mark the anniversary of his death by raising £10,000 for suicide prevention charity, Pieta House and the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum.

By last night he had surpassed that amount twice and was on course to raise £35,000 by the time he finishes tomorrow.

Announcing his plan on the anniversary of his father's death in March, the fitness instructor said his father was his model and teacher.

"His passion for sports and motivation to push himself to his physical limits have live on in me. In the 10 years since his death, I have remembered him and carried on his memory in different ways," Mr Quigley said.

He set out to commemorate his father in a special way that was true to his character and in a way which challenged himself. Since the start of his challenge, Mr Quigley has been posting videos and messages on social media, acknowledging the support he has received.

"I'm going to bed every night unable to walk up my doorsteps or get out of the car without help. Literally the only thing getting me through is all the people around me, the support I've been receiving is unbelievable," Mr Quigley said.

A large crowd is expected to turn out at Foyle Road tomorrow for the end of Mr Quigley's challenge.

Several events will be taking place from 3pm onwards while Mr Quigley is expected complete his final marathon around 7.30pm to 8.30pm.
