THE death of a man in an industrial accident at a factory in Co Tyrone has caused "shock and disbelief" among the workforce.

The victim, named locally as 35-year-old Allister Kelly from the Cabragh area outside Dungannon, died following an incident at Linden Foods at the Granville Industrial Estate.

It is the second workplace fatality to take place in less than 48 hours.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE NI) was last night investigating.

On Tuesday 21-year-old Matthew Biggerstaff was killed in an accident at Taranto construction factory in Tandragee in Co Armagh.

Mr Kelly is understood to have been a maintenance technician at the site and it is believed the accident involved machinery.

Emergency services were called to the factory on the Eskragh Road, outside Dungannon at around 9am yesterday.

A former pupil of Drumglass High School in Dungannon, Mr Kelly was married with a young son.

A spokesman for the HSE NI said inspectors were attending the scene while the PSNI said both it and the HSE were "investigating an incident in which a man has died at commercial premises in the Eskragh Road area of Dungannon earlier today. Inquiries are ongoing."

In a statement, a spokesman for Linden Foods said its thoughts were with "the family, friends and workmates of our deceased colleague.

"Safety is a priority at Linden Foods and we are investigating the circumstances of the tragic accident and fully co-operating with the relevant authorities," he said.

"We will be providing full support to those colleagues impacted by this tragic incident".

Mid Ulster District Council representative Dominic Molloy, who works at the site as a planning manager, said the accident had caused "shock" among the workforce.

"I would express my massive sympathies to the family," the Sinn Féin councillor said.

"There is shock and disbelief and just a quietness in the factory. Everybody is just subdued and can not believe it.

"The HSE are on site and are going through their investigations".

Dungannon UUP councillor Walter Cuddy said: "There is a sense of shock locally following this terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with Allister's family, including his young son."

DUP Clogher Valley councillor Frances Burton added her condolences.

“I am truly devastated to hear of this young man’s passing. It is such a tragic incident, which will be felt very deeply by his family and friends," she said.
