THE founder of Derry’s Foyle Hospice Dr Tom McGinley has been described as a "true visionary" following his death at the age of 86.

Born in New York, Dr McGinley grew up in Gweedore in Co Donegal before settling in Derry where he worked all his life as a GP.

Dr McGinley established a working group to raise the funds for a hospice in 1984.

He decided to establish the Foyle Hospice because of the helplessness he felt in dealing with an 18-year-old patient who had terminal cancer.

Dr McGinley played a full role in fundraising for the new hospice, even to the point of running marathons all over the world to raise money for the project.

The hospice was eventually opened in 1985 on land purchased from the Orange Order overlooking the River Foyle.

Dr McGinley was the recipient of a number of awards for his work.

He was made a papal knight by Pope John Paul II in 2002 and was granted the Freedom of Derry in 2014.

A keen GAA fan, he retained strong links with Gweedore GAC with which he was a senior player in his youth.

Confirming his death, chairwoman of the Foyle Hospice, Angela McIntyre said Dr McGinley was not just a colleague and mentor to staff but a confidante to patients and their families.

Mrs McIntyre described Dr McGinley as a “true visionary”.

Dr McGinley’s son, Ciaran said he was “broken hearted”.

“My truly amazing dad and mentor has gone to his rest,” he said.

Derry mayor Brian Tierney said everyone in the north west was grateful for Dr McGinley’s determination, dedication and passion.

SDLP leader, Colum Eastwood extended his sympathies to Dr McGinley’s family while SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said he played a significant role in the lives of families across the region.

“His great contribution and legacy within this city and beyond will live on,” Mr Durkan said.

Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan said Dr McGinley provided care as a GP and founder of the Foyle Hospice.

A book of condolence has also gone online on Derry City and Strabane District council's website and can be signed at http://bit.ly/BOCDrMcGinley.
