Body recovered in search for missing Strabane woman

A BODY has been found in the search for missing Strabane mother-of-two Marion O’Neill.

A huge search was launched after Ms O’Neill (55) went missing from her home in the Co Tyrone town on Monday January 4.

Police issued CCTV footage of the last sighting of the missing woman as she crossed a footbridge near Alexander Place. The search was joined by emergency services, rescue organisations and hundreds of volunteers.

It was confirmed on Tuesday evening however that that the body of a woman has been recovered from the River Foyle.

A spokesman for Foyle Search and Rescue said:

“A multi-agency recovery operation took place involving the Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Garda Síochána and Community Rescue Service after a body was observed in the river by a kayaker located in Co Donegal,” the spokesman said.

A spokeswoman Ms O’Neill’s family thanked all those who took part in the search.

“The family cannot thank you all individually and will never be able to repay you for your time spent in the recovery of Marion but it’s been heartbreakingly overwhelming to say the least,” she said.
