A west Belfast community organisation which runs an annual Christmas donation drive to help families has told how Covid-19 means this year will be "exceptionally difficult" for some.

Whiterock Children's Centre, which last year supported more than 200 children at Christmas, has begun its latest appeal early due to the anticipated need for help.

Usually, the centre appeals for donations of toys and clothes which it then delivers to homes in the Upper Springfield and Whiterock areas.

However, the coronavirus pandemic means this cannot be done and it has asked instead for vouchers for major stores. Donations of cash can also be made.

The team have asked that any donations be made to the centre by Monday December 6.

Deirdre Walsh, director of Whiterock Children's Centre, said she anticipates the need for support will increase with the end of the furlough scheme.

She said many of those in need will be the families of people who have "worked all their lives" and have never had to ask for help but will have lost jobs due to Covid-19.

"It is extremely difficult," she said.

"Vouchers help to keep it confidential".

Ms Walsh said she is also concerned that people who normally make donations will not be able to do so in the same way this year.

"The local clubs would have given us money. A lot of them are paying off staff. We really don't know what we are getting this year.

"We have had more requests from agencies for help than ever before.

"We are starting to prepare. It is going to be an exceptionally difficult time."

The centre director said the team supported more than 200 children last Christmas and are gearing up for more this year.

"It makes a massive difference," she said.

"The stories people come back with of people breaking down in tears - just to have that extra thing and have something for a child and some clothing. We are part of the community and it's giving back."

She added: "We get nothing out of this. What comes in, we give out again.

"It is all given out to families in a crisis situation and any of us can be in that situation."

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Sharon or Maura at Whiterock Children's Centre on 02890 438438.
