A 31-year-old man who died in a road crash in Scotland has been named locally as Dan McGeown from Co Antrim.

Mr McGeown is understood to be from the Aldergrove area of Crumlin.

The one-vehicle collision happened on the A90 Stonehaven to Dundee road neat the Fettercairn junction at around 6.10am on Monday.

SDLP councillor Thomas Burns expressed his sympathy to the family.

"It was a very tragic accident and just a terrible thing to happen to somebody so young and away from his home," he said.

Police Scotland, who did not officially name the driver of the silver Ford Focus, said he died at the scene.

The road was closed for almost five hours to allow investigations and Sergeant Peter Henderson of the Road Policing Unit said motorists "stopped and helped at the scene of this tragic incident".

In February, The Press and Journal reported calls for the Scottish government and roads chiefs "to concentrate on changes to the design of the road - including flyovers and improved junctions" after serious crashes increased, despite the installation of £2m average speed cameras.

Concerned residents cited dangerous junctions, lack of flyovers or grade separation, a lack of lighting, poor drainage and the surface quality as problematic.

North East MSP Liam Kerr told the publication the figures were "extremely concerning".

"I have repeatedly warned the Scottish Government the A90 must be designed better, which will reduce the number of crashes and fatalities.

“One death is one too many and the SNP Government must make proper safety improvements to the route itself before more people are killed."
