A 21-year-old man suffered a fractured skull after he was beaten with a baseball bat in an "an appalling and brutal attack" in Limavady.
The man was approached by two men in Gorteen Crescent in the Co Derry town at around 6pm yesterday.
One of the men hit the 21-year-old on the head before running off.
The victim was taken to hospital, where he is still being treated.
A police spokesman said: "This was an appalling and brutal attack on a young man."
He appealed to anyone with information to contact police on 101.
