Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee joins BBC drama project on coronavirus lockdown

DERRY Girls writer Lisa McGee and Game of Thrones actor Conleth Hill are among the top Northern Ireland talent involved in a collection of new TV drama shorts about the coronavirus lockdown.

Splendid Isolation: Lockdown Drama is a set of six theatrical commissions, each lasting five minutes, to be broadcast on the BBC.

Filmed in accordance with social distancing guidelines, it aims to explore the positive and negative aspects of social isolation and lockdown caused by the pandemic.

It is being produced in collaboration with Belfast's Lyric Theatre and with support from the Arts Council.

The writers involved are Lisa McGee, who wrote the hit Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, Owen McCafferty, David Ireland, Abbie Spallen, Sarah Gordon and Stacey Gregg.

Ms McGee said: "I'm thrilled to be working with the Lyric and the BBC on this ambitious project and to be collaborating with such exciting Northern Irish talent."

Conleth Hill from fantasy drama Game of Thrones is among the directors, as well as Des Kennedy, Emma Jordan, Jimmy Fay, Cathy Brady and Damian McCann.

Actors to feature include Anthony Boyle, Stella McCusker, Kerri Quinn, Sarah Gordon, Abigail McGibbon and David Pearse.

The commission is part of the Culture in Quarantine series from BBC Arts.

Splendid Isolation: Lockdown Drama will broadcast on BBC Two NI on June 25 at 10pm, and will be made available afterwards on BBC Four and iPlayer.

Meanwhile, Tourism NI has released an online video paying tribute to how people in the north have responded to the pandemic.

Narrated by Derry Girls actor Ian McElhinney, the tourism body said the film is a "gesture designed to raise spirits and send a small message of hope and resilience".
