POLICE have issued a fresh appeal for information on the first anniversary of the death of a Derry teenager whose body was found in the burnt out remains of a crashed stolen car.

Following the death of Caoimhin Cassidy (18) on June 1 last year, police revealed he was still alive when the stolen car caught fire.

Mr Cassidy was believed to be travelling in the stolen car when it was involved in a single-vehicle collision at Fairview Road. From Creggan Heights, the teenager was reported missing when he failed to return home on May 31.

PSNI Detective Inspector Michael Winters said yesterday, investigations into Mr Cassidy's death were still live.

"The results of the post mortem examination subsequently told us that Caoimhin was not seriously injured as a result of a crash and was most likely still alive when the blaze started. We believe that Caoimhin was not travelling alone in the vehicle," he said.

"If you can cast your mind back and remember anything about Caoimhin’s movements, or those of the red Mazda 6, on the evening of Friday 31 May, then please get in touch. Any detail, no matter how small it might seem, could be invaluable."
