Recycling centres in Belfast to reopen but 'require proof of address'

Recycling centres in Belfast are to reopen from Monday morning but people will be asked to provide proof that they live in the council area.

Belfast City Councill announced this morning that most of its centres will open from 9am on Monday after the Executive said yesterday that it would move to stage one of moves to relax the coronavirus lockdown.

Centres will open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and will be closed on Sunday.

Belfast City Council said social distancing will be observed at all sites.

Members of the public will be asked to provide proof that they live in the Belfast council area before they can use the sites.

People are warned to expect significant queues and delays. The council asked residents to consider if their visit is absolutely essential.

Recycling centres will only be able to accept:

  • Bagged general waste/non-recyclable waste/black bag waste
  • Garden waste (grass, hedge trimmings – no garden furniture or machinery)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Cardboard

Vans or trailers will not be allowed.

The public will be responsible for unloading their own waste.

Civic amenity sites at Agnes Street, Cregagh Road and Springfield Road will remain closed.

Mid Ulster District Council said today it would reopen three of its centres in Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt from Monday.

Members of the public are asked to visit the recycling centres only:

  • if they are unable to use their existing bins to dispose of their waste and material for recycling and cannot store excess waste safely at home
  • if their journey is essential
  • if they are able to lift their waste directly into the site’s skips and containers
  • only trailers with green waste for disposal will be accepted

Only a limited number of vehicles will be allowed at the sites at one time.

From Monday, opening hours will be:

Cookstown 9am – 6pm; Dungannon and Magherafelt 9am – 1pm and 3pm – 6pm

Other recycling centres will reopen on a phased basis.
