A RANGE of diverse initiatives across Northern Ireland have been shortlisted for this year's Heritage Angel Award to celebrate unsung heroes preserving local history.

There are 15 projects across five categories and the 2019 shortlist includes private owners; volunteers; community groups; apprentices; craftsmen and young people.

The overall winner in each category will be named at the Northern Ireland Heritage Angel Awards ceremony hosted by Wendy Austin on Tuesday October 29 at the Market Place Theatre, Armagh.

The event will also celebrate `heritage in song and spoken word', with bespoke material specially created for the event featuring Brigid O'Neill, Tony Villiers, Rioghanch Connolly, Brendan & Declan Murphy of The 4 of Us, Maria McManus and the Armagh Pipers.

Urging people to vote, Nicola McVeigh, chief executive Ulster Architectural Heritage Society, said it has been "truly overwhelmed with quantity and quality of entries".

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose foundation is a co-sponsor, said "protecting architectural heritage is a vital part of cultural life (and) is the most vulnerable art form".

"By raising awareness of the impact individuals can have, our aim is to inspire others to get involved and work together to save and protect Northern Ireland’s heritage for our future generations."
